Muhammad was born in the 6th century in Arabia. He grew up in Mecca, which was a great trading city. Muhammad believed he was inspired by God to create a new religion. His message was this: there is only one God (Allah), and Muhammad is his prophet. Muhammad’s teachings annoyed Mecca’s wealthy merchants. He and his followers were attacked, and Muhammad was forbidden to preach. So in 622 they moved to Medina. This journey is called the Hejira. It marks the beginning of Islam. In the Muslim calendar, it is year 1. |
