中高生のみんなにとって、英語は教科書や問題集で見たり解いたりするだけで、実際に使うことなんてほとんどないよねぇ。でも、英語は受験科目である前に、日常使われる生きた言葉なので、使わないとなかなか身につかないんじゃないかな？ただ、受験生だと英会話教室に通ったり、英語の小説やニュースを読んだりする暇はないだろうし・・・。そこで、今回お勧めするのは、“英語を”勉強するのではなく、他の教科を勉強するのに英語を使い、“英語も”同時に身につける方法です。すなわち、英語で書かれた理科や社会などの教科書を英語のまま読みながら、英語も他教科の知識も同時に身につけよう!という欲張りなお話。すでに日本語で習った範囲であれば、少々知らない単語があっても推測できるので、ぜひ挑戦してみてごらん。

まずは、SCIENCEから。

Animals have to find their food. But plants make their own.
Plants take carbon dioxide gas from the air and water from the soil.
They turn these into food (sugar) and oxygen gas by using energy from sunlight.
The process by which green plants turn carbon dioxide and water into food using energy from sunlight is called photosynthesis.

さ～て、何の話か分かったかな？Plants（植物）がenergy from sunlight を使ってcarbon dioxide gas(二酸化炭素)と water をfood とoxygen gas (酸素)に変えるprocess (過程)ということだから、これは光合成の話だね！高校生なら、
6CO2 +12H2O +光エネルギー→C6H12O6 + 6H2O + 6O2
という反応式を思い浮かべながら読めたことでしょう。

Muhammad was born in the 6th century in Arabia. He grew up in Mecca, which was a great trading city. Muhammad believed he was inspired by God to create a new religion. His message was this: there is only one God (Allah), and Muhammad is his prophet. Muhammad’s teachings annoyed Mecca’s wealthy merchants. He and his followers were attacked, and Muhammad was forbidden to preach. So in 622 they moved to Medina. This journey is called the Hejira. It marks the beginning of Islam. In the Muslim calendar, it is year 1.

さ～て、何の話か分かったかな？分からなかった人は社会科の教科書で「イスラム教の起こり」あたりを読んでごらん。きっと、辞書なしで上の英文が理解できるはず。

その他英文法なども、OxfordやCambridgeなどの本は読みやすくて分かりやすいので、本屋の洋書コーナーで一度手にとってみることをお勧めします。
